VA and state programs

Veterans Benefits

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA), is composed of 3 major divisions. They are the Veterans Health Administration, the Veterans Benefits Administration and the National Cemetery Administration. The 50 states and 4 US territories offer veterans benefits according to Military.com. These benefits change constantly, so it is critical to review them at least once per year. Most people know about many of the more important benefits for veterans offered by the VA. We can’t cover all the benefits, but we can get you started.

Veterans Health Administration

The VA’s latest update is Health Care Benefits Overview 2026 Edition, Vol. 1. This publication is offered as an e-publication available for download.

02

Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA)

The VBA administers many different benefits. The more common benefits are compensation, pension, home loans, life insurance, and education and training. You can access their website here.

National Cemetery Administration (NCA)

Burial benefits available include gravesites, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, all at no cost to the family. The NCA administers 142 national cemeteries that have available space. To determine the eligibility requirements for the burial benefits go to National Cemetery Administration.

Support for families

Benefits for caregivers.

Family caregivers often help Veterans with personal care, transportation, appointments, and everyday needs. The VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers may provide support to eligible caregivers while helping them care for a Veteran—and care for themselves.
